Human Necessity :: Religion Christianity Papers
Hu composition NecessityToday, we put out in a world where the question, why? proceeds nearly every statement or action. We live in a society where faith alone, for most, is not enough to justify belief. In her novel Regeneration, Pat Barker shows us this need to question by referring to the Gospel of Saint Luke. On page 106, Dr. Rivers recites Luke 423 to himself Ye will sure say unto me this proverb. Physician repossess thyself. Barker uses this Biblical reference to bring a theme concurrent with the entire novel our innate human need to seek justification for actions. The phrase, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb. Physician heal thyself, is spoken by Jesus in the Gospel of Saint Luke. Saint Luke tells us that at the age of 30 Jesus began his public ministry. Prior to his preaching, he had worked as a simple carpenter in the city of Nazareth (New International Version Bible, Luke 323). Upon hearing about the arrest of John the Baptist, Jesus left wing Nazareth and went to Capernaum, a city close to the Jordan River. In Capernaum, Jesus began his teachings. Jesus would preach in synagogues and perform miracles casting out demons, making the paralyzed walk, and relieving deadly fevers from the dismal (Capernaum). News of the coming of a Messiah spread all over Galilee, including to Jesus hometown of Nazareth, where the residents had never known Jesus as the Messiah, or as a man who could perform miracles. To the residents of Nazareth, Jesus was merely a simple carpenter. For thirty years, the people of Nazareth had referred to Jesus as The Perfect Man, but never had witnessed a miracle or anything that would spry them to think more highly of Jesus (Gledenhuys 167). The residents of Nazareth had heard of Jesus miracles at Capernaum and were eager to see if this man, whom they had known since birth, was what he claimed to be. Jesus began preaching to the Nazarenes, but as he spoke the residents began to grumble and question each other Isnt this Josephs son? (New International Version Bible, Luke 422). They did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah, because they had not seen any sensible evidence they had not witnessed a miracle. Jesus, sensing their lack of faith, says to them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb. Physician heal thyself (New International Version Bible, Luke 423).
The Solitaire Metaphor in John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men :: Steinbeck Of Mice and Men Essays
The Solitaire Metaphor in Of Mice and Men   In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George Milton is shown many times playing the game of Solitaire, a card game which requires moreover one man and a pack of playing cards. His companion, Lennie Small is never asked to play cards or other games because George knows in spades that Lennie is incapable of such a mental task. Although Lennie and George be companions, George has the idea of being solitaire to be no longer burdened by Lennies company. Solitaire, meaning alone, is a metaphor for the loneliness that many of the characters feel in the novel. John Steinbeck shows in Of Mice and Men, that all human beings are essentially alone.   I aint got no people. I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That aint no good. They dont construct no fun. After a long time they get mean. They get wantin to fight all the time... Course Lennies a matinee idol damn nuisance most of the time, but you get used to go in around with a guy an you cant get rid of him (45). George proclaims his view on loneliness to pull up stakes a reason for his connection with Lennie. This connection George has with Lennie makes the two of them unique to the rest of the characters. Many of the men on the ranch have a dream, but only Lennie and George have a chance of obtaining it. Essentially, John Steinbeck wants to show that although George and Lennie have the advantage of being a team, they will never accomplish it because all human beings are in essence, alone. Thus, Georges constant playing of the game of solitaire foreshadows his eventual decision to become a solitary man.   John Steinbeck demonstrates loneliness of Crooks, the black handicap. He has a strong difference from the rest of the crew, as he must live in a separate room from the rest of the workers. He attempts to explain this to Lennie, Spose you didnt have nobody. Spose you couldnt go into the bunk house and play rummy cause y ou was black. Howd you like that? Spose you had to sit out here an read books.
